He would tell you, and he would believe it while he said it, that he let that go years ago.
It was nine years ago. A young man who was very bright and had nothing, in a year when things at home had come apart, and there were fees and a deposit and one month where there was no food in the flat that anybody knew about except him, because a young man of that sort does not say. And he helped. Twice. The second time was the larger one.
He has never told anybody the figure. Not his wife, not his closest friend, and there is a reason he has never told anybody the figure, which is that he knows it to the last unit, nine years later, without pausing to think.
That is the whole article, really. A man who has let something go does not know the figure to the last unit.
The young man is doing well now. Not wealthy, but well. He teaches somewhere in the north and there was a piece published in the spring, and he sent it, with a warm note, and there was a line in the note about how much he owed him. Owed him. Meaning gratitude. Obviously meaning gratitude.
And a thing happened in his chest when he read the word owed, and he sat in his study for some time afterwards with a cold cup beside him and a piece of good news on the screen that he was not able to enjoy.
You know that study. Yours might be a figure, or a favor, or the number of times you drove somewhere for somebody. And you would say, and you would half believe, that it is nothing and it is long finished. The tell is not bitterness. The tell is precision. A thing you have genuinely put down goes blurry at the edges after nine years.
Come and sit at this end of the table. The tea is fresh and the light is good. There is a short story of Jesus that has four sentences in it and one very strange word.

There is no code, and there is a creditor who canceled both
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I will not keep a careful man reading in hope of one.
There is no code. There is no arrangement of Scripture that recovers a sum from nine years ago. Nothing in this message is a technique, and if letting go were a lever for producing repayment then it would not be letting go, it would be a slower form of accounting, and God has never once done business with anybody in that way.
Here is the story, and it is told at a dinner party where a man is being quietly superior about a woman crying on the floor.
There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both.Luke 7:41-42
Take the small word. Frankly. In older English it carries the sense of freely, outright, with nothing held back and nothing attached. Not adjusted. Not deferred. Not forgiven with a small permanent asterisk beside the name.
And notice when he does it. When they had nothing to pay. Not when one of them made a proposal. Not when the larger debtor acknowledged the scale of what he had been carried through. At the exact point where recovery became impossible, the creditor closed both books, and Jesus makes it the picture of what God does with people.
Now, the reason He tells it at all is that a man at the table had a figure in his head about somebody else. And Jesus does not accuse him. He tells him a story about arithmetic and lets the arithmetic do the work.
You are not being accused here, and there is nothing shameful in a man discovering he still knows a number. That is not a kindness I have arranged at a table. It is exactly how Jesus handled the man in Luke 7, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a story told at somebody else's dinner and lays it beside a cold cup in a study.
You have a God who cancels outright rather than in installments, and He has never once kept a permanent asterisk beside your name. Scripture says frankly, and the Spirit is the one who takes a small old word and makes it land as relief rather than as information.
Now let me be exact with you, since exactness is how you and I both prefer to be handled.
You did not keep the figure because you wanted the money. You have never once wanted the money. You kept it because in the year you gave it you were carrying more than anybody knew, and giving it cost you something real, and nobody ever saw that, and the number is the only object in the world that holds the record of what it cost.
And then a warm note arrived in the spring using the word owed in a completely innocent sense, and the record moved in you, because a record that has been kept for nine years is not inert.
You were seen in that year, and the cost of it was not lost. Scripture says that God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which is a sentence about a ledger kept somewhere better than a study, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line like that and settles it in a chest that has been holding something on its own.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a thing carried in silence for nine years does not lift because a friend was perceptive over tea. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quiet mastery of oneself never does. So speak, out loud, in that room. You have the standing to speak to a ledger you have kept and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by generosity, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a study door.
Something can end tonight, and it is not your friendship with him. Nobody is going to be told anything, and I would say so directly if I meant otherwise.
You are held by a God who forgives frankly, outright, at the point where nothing could be paid, and He has never once made a man's freedom wait on being thanked properly. That is not a mood I am building over tea. It is written in Luke 7, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a four sentence story land in a body sitting in a study with cold tea and good news he could not enjoy. What He does about the money, the years and that young man's career is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you off with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether the book may be closed. It may, and you are the only person on earth who has to write the word, because you were always the only person holding the page.
So close it. And then read the piece he sent you properly, because it is good, and it is partly yours.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the study with the door shut. Not because the words are a key and God is a lock. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with anything that young man ever says. What He does about the money, the years and his career is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have set down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this room, so let Him.
- Ledger I keep in my head, you are nine years of arithmetic and you are not a record. It is written that a creditor frankly forgave two men who had nothing to pay, and the God who told that story chose the word frankly on purpose.
- Pretense that I let it go, get out of my study, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says God is not unrighteous to forget my labor of love, and what that year cost me was never lost or unseen.
- Lord, You cancel outright and never in installments, and You have never kept an asterisk beside my name. I let it go and I am not the poorer, and there is no sum in my head when his name comes up.
