The Friend Who Never Came Back

This message is for the woman owed both money and an apology by a friend from church who simply stopped coming, and who has kept the whole thing filed and ready in case she ever sees her again

They were the two who always ended up doing the washing up, and that is how it started, standing at a sink in a church kitchen laughing about a man who had prayed for eleven minutes.

Four years of that. Holidays with both families. A hospital sit through one bad night. And then a stretch where things were hard for her friend, genuinely hard, and money moved between them in one direction, twice, and neither time was there a conversation with the word loan in it.

And then her friend stopped coming. Not dramatically. She missed a few, then a few more, then the small group, and then there was a message that said she was taking a step back for a bit, and then nothing.

That was two years ago.

Here is what she has. She has the two amounts and the two dates. She has the exact wording of the message about stepping back. She has three or four things her friend said in the last six months that look different now, in the light, than they did at the time. She has a whole account, assembled, ordered, and completely unused.

She saw her in September, in the frozen aisle, forty feet away. And both of them did the thing where you look at the shelf with tremendous interest.

She got to the car before she started shaking, and what shook her was not sadness. It was that in the four seconds while she was deciding, she had felt the whole file come up ready. Every part of it. Two years of it, right there, on the surface, in a supermarket, at speed.

You know that aisle. Yours might be a brother, a former colleague, somebody at a school gate. You may not have said a word about it to anybody and you would be mortified if they knew how complete the file is. And that completeness is the tell. Nobody assembles two years of evidence about someone they have finished with.

Come and sit down. I want to hand you a sentence that is going to feel like it is taking your side and is actually going to take your file.

The Friend Who Never Came Back

There is no code, and there is one measure

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I would rather lose you now than hold you with a hint.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that makes what you are owed come back, and nothing in this message is a technique for recovery. If letting go were a lever that produced repayment, it would not be letting go, it would be a slower grip, and God does not do business that way with anybody.

What is in here is one line about the measure, and it is a hard one to hold and easy to read.

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.Colossians 3:13

Everything in that verse hangs on three words: even as Christ. Not: forgive when they explain. Not: forgive once the terms are agreed. The measure is the way He did it with you, and the way He did it with you had no negotiation in it at all.

Look at the shape of what happened to you. There was no meeting. Nobody sat you down to establish what you had actually done and in what order. You did not present your side, because you did not have a side. He forgave, and the whole account went, and you found out about it afterwards, and you have been living off it ever since.

You are not required to hold anything until it is properly acknowledged, and the releasing was never conditional on her side of the story. That is not a soft idea I am offering you in a church hall. It is written into Colossians 3, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a measure set by the cross and lays it across a supermarket aisle in September.

You have been forgiven an account nobody could total, and that is the exact measure you have been handed to use. Scripture says even as, and the Spirit is the one who takes those two small words and makes them weigh what they weigh.

Now let me name the real thing, because the money is the least of it and you know that.

The file is not about repayment. The file exists because it is the only place where the friendship still gets to matter. As long as the account is open, something is still happening between you. Close it, and the whole thing is simply over, and over is unbearable, because four years of a person does not stop being four years of a person just because they stepped back.

That is what came up in four seconds in the frozen aisle. Not fury. Grief with a case file stapled to it, because grief with paperwork is easier to carry than grief on its own.

You are not bitter, and the file was never proof of anything wrong in you. Scripture says that God is near to them that are of a broken heart, near being a position rather than a mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written word like near and makes a woman able to grieve something properly at last.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because two years of assembling does not undo itself because somebody was kind to you over coffee. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quiet enduring never does. So speak it, out loud, on your own. You have the standing to speak to a file you have been keeping and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your patience, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a front room.

The breakthrough

Something can close today, and it is not the friendship. I cannot bring her back, and I will not stand in front of you implying that this half hour has.

You are held by a God who forgave you an account nobody could total and never once asked you to explain yourself first, and He has never made your freedom depend on her. That is not a mood I am building over coffee. It is written in Colossians 3, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a written measure land in a body that went shaky in a car park in September. What He does about your friend, the money and the years is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you may close the file. You may. It stopped being evidence a long time ago and became a way of keeping her.

So close it. And then let yourself be sad about her properly, which is what the file has been protecting you from for two years.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on your own. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what she ever does. What He does about your friend and the money and the coming years is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this room, so let Him.

  1. File I keep on a friend, you are two years of paperwork and you are not a wall. It is written that we forgive even as Christ forgave us, and the God who wrote that did not wait for me to straighten anything out first.
  2. Readiness to be proved right, get out of my house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is near to the broken hearted, and He has never once told me that missing her was weakness.
  3. Lord, You forgave me an account nobody could total and You never asked me to explain myself first, and even as You forgave is the whole of the measure. I let it go and I am not the poorer, and I walk into that shop with nothing prepared.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
