His grandmother laid the table with her hands behind her back, counting under her breath, and she always counted one more than there were people.
Everybody knew. Nobody discussed it. If you asked her she would say something short and go back to the pot. As a boy he thought it was for a person, and he used to watch the door. As a teenager he thought it was superstition and rolled his eyes about it in front of his cousins. Somewhere in his twenties he stopped noticing it, the way you stop noticing a wall.
She has been gone nine years. The table came to him, the actual table, because he had the room for it, and the family still comes.
And this year, in December, with everybody in the house and the noise coming through the wall, he counted the plates. Fourteen. Fourteen people, fourteen plates, and every single chair had somebody in it, and it was perfect, and he stood in the doorway with a cloth over his shoulder and felt something go through him that he could not name for two days.
He has not set the extra place since she died. Not once. Not deliberately. It simply stopped, the way things stop.
And when he finally worked out what he was feeling, it was not sentiment about his grandmother. It was this: a table with every seat taken cannot receive anybody. His house has become a house you have to be invited to. There is no gap in it. And he is the one who made it that way, without a single decision, by counting exactly right for nine years.
You know that table. Yours may be a Sunday that fills up by Wednesday. It may be a car with no spare seat because of the shopping. It may be a life where everything works and there is no room in it for a person who has not been arranged in advance. You are not selfish. You are organized, and being organized has quietly closed something.
Come through and sit down. There is food. I want to show you a line from the oldest book we have, and it is about a morsel.

There is no code, and there is one more place
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I would rather you got up and left than sat here waiting for one.
There is no code. There is nothing you can do at a table that unlocks provision. There is no arrangement of Scripture about money that turns hospitality into a lever, and if there were, then God would be a man at the door with a clipboard, and I have been welcomed by Him too many times to let that stand in my house.
What is in this book is older and better. Job is defending his life, and he does it by listing what he did with his own table.
If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof.Job 31:16-17
Hear the phrase in the middle of it. My morsel, myself, alone. Not my wealth. Not my surplus. His morsel, which is a small thing, the piece in his own hand. And he holds up the fact that he never ate it alone as evidence that his life was not empty.
That is not a giving program. There is no amount in it and no scheme. It is a man saying: I never once got to the end of my own plate with nobody else at it.
You were never meant to eat your own life alone, and one place at your table was never yours to fill. That is not something I have arranged to be lovely with you. It is written in the oldest defense in Scripture, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line about a morsel and lays it across fourteen plates in December.
You have a Father who sets more places than there are guests, and He has never once counted exactly. Scripture says He prepares a table, and His Spirit is the one who takes a prepared table in a psalm and starts pulling out an actual chair in an actual room.
Now let me name the true thing, because you would feel it if I skipped it.
What closed the gap in your house was not meanness. It was the nine years. When she died, the counting became something you could control in a year when nothing else was controllable, and you did it well, and doing it well felt like honoring her. But the thing she actually handed you was not the table. It was the extra chair, and the extra chair is the only part of the inheritance you have not been using.
You are not a closed man, and nothing about the nine years was a failure of love. Scripture says that God sets the solitary in families, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a word like solitary and makes a man realize there is space in his house after all.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a habit nine years deep does not shift because a friend said something warm over dinner. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quiet remembering never does. So speak, in your own dining room, out loud. You have the standing to speak to a habit in your own house and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by heritage, and the Holy Spirit carries a spoken word further than a full room.
Something can open tonight, and it is not the house or the calendar. I cannot make your December less busy and I would not pretend a good meal has. What can open is the fist.
You are held by a God who prepares a table and never counts exactly, and He has never once asked you to eat your own life alone. That is not a feeling I am working up over the plates. It is written in Job 31, and it is the Spirit's own work to make an old line land in a body standing in a doorway with a cloth on his shoulder. What He does about your money, your work and your family is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you off with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whose the extra place is. It was never yours to fill, and setting it costs you nothing that was ever yours.
So set it. Not for anybody. That is the point.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud standing at the table with a chair pulled out. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what is in the cupboard. What He does about the money, the family and the year is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes these words further than this room, so let Him.
- Table set for exactly the number, you are a good table and you are not a closed door. It is written that a man does not eat his morsel alone, and the God who wrote that has always set more places than there were people.
- Fear that the pot will not go round, get out of my house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is not asking me to cook for strangers every night, He is opening a hand that closed in the nine years, and He has never called those years my fault.
- Lord, You prepare a table and You have never once counted exactly, and the extra place was Yours before it was anybody else's. One more chair goes out tonight, and I am not waiting to be told who it is for.
