The Open HandDeuteronomy 23:24-25

The Grapes You May Eat and Not Carry

This message is for the man whose spreadsheet has no unallocated cell in it, who built the sheet to stop the panic and now cannot look at a blank row without assigning it something

The sheet has fourteen tabs and a summary page, and the summary page has one figure on it that is meant to be zero, and it is zero, and that is the whole point.

He built it in the year the contract ended. He remembers the exact evening. He sat down with a bank statement and a mug and he was, if he is honest with himself, frightened in a way he had not been since he was a boy, and by about one in the morning there was a sheet, and the sheet had every single thing in it, and he slept.

That was six years ago. The sheet has been running ever since. Every pound that comes into this house has a name on it before it arrives. Every category is funded to the day. The unallocated line reads zero and he keeps it at zero, and when it is at zero he can breathe.

Last month a small refund came in from something he had forgotten about. Not a large amount. And he sat at the desk for the better part of forty minutes deciding where it should go, moving it between two categories, and when he finally assigned it and the unallocated line went back to zero, he felt something in his chest let go.

He noticed himself feeling it. That is what brought him here. Because a man should not need a cell to be full in order to be able to breathe, and he knows that, and he cannot stop.

His wife asked him last week whether they could just take the children somewhere on Saturday, and he said, let me look, and she said, no, I know you can look, I mean can we just go. And he did not have an answer for her, because there is no row in that sheet called just go.

You know that sheet. Yours may be a diary. It may be an evening routine that cannot be moved. It may be a way of thinking about money where nothing is ever loose, and the reason nothing is ever loose is that one year everything was loose and you nearly went under. You built the thing that saved you, and now the thing runs you, and it has been running you for a while.

Come and sit at the end of the table where the light is. There is bread and there is fruit. I want to show you the strangest law about property in the whole of Scripture.

The Grapes You May Eat and Not Carry

There is no code, and there is an edge you cannot harvest

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I will not keep a careful man reading in hope of one.

There is no code. There is no arrangement of Hebrew words that makes an account behave. There is nothing you can do with a spreadsheet, or with a corner of a spreadsheet, that unlocks provision. If there were, God would be a mechanism with a Bible verse on the front of it, and every one of these old laws is written in the opposite direction: they cost the owner something and promise him nothing.

Here is the one I want in your hands. It is easy to walk past. Read it as though nobody had ever explained it to you.

When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel. When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.Deuteronomy 23:24-25

Sit inside that for a moment. A hungry man walking past your vineyard may go in. Not ask. Go in. And eat as much as he wants, until he is full, at his own pleasure, which is an astonishing phrase to find in a law code about somebody else's property. What he may not do is fill a container. No vessel. No sickle. He may be fed and he may not harvest.

Now look at what that does to the owner, which is you. It means his field is never fully his in the way he thinks it is. There is a permanent, unremovable openness built into it that he did not choose and cannot close. He can plan every row. He can know his yield to the basket. And there is still a standing permission written across the whole of it by God, for a person the owner will never meet, that his planning has no authority over.

You do not own the whole of your own field, and there is an openness in it that was written by God rather than budgeted by you. That is not a comfort I have arranged for a man with fourteen tabs. It is written into Deuteronomy 23, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a law about vineyards and lays it across a summary page that has to read zero.

You have a God who has already built the margin, and He has never once asked you to be the one who guarantees the year. Scripture says He gives food to the hungry and He upholds all that fall, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lets a chest come unclenched at a desk.

Now let me name the thing under it, because we are both precise men and you would spot me softening it.

You did not build that sheet out of greed. You built it out of fear, on a specific night, at about one in the morning, and it worked. That is the difficulty. It worked. And a thing that saves you once is very hard to demote afterwards, because demoting it feels like inviting the bad year back through the door.

So the sheet stopped being a tool and became a wall, and the wall has no gate in it, and last week your wife asked for a gate and you did not have one to give her.

You are not a fearful man for having built it, and no line of that sheet was ever a sin. Scripture does not shame a person for counting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can open a hand without saying one hard word about the night it closed.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a six year habit does not move because a teacher explained a law well. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what careful planning never does. So speak, at your own desk, out loud. You have the standing to tell an old fear what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your discipline, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a study door.

The breakthrough

Something can open tonight, and it is not the summary page. I cannot fund your categories and I would not sit at your table implying that a conversation has. What can open is the fist.

You are held by a God who wrote a standing permission across every field in Israel and asked no owner's opinion about it, and He has never once required you to allocate the whole of your life. That is not a mood I am building over fruit and bread. It is written in Deuteronomy 23, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a written law land in a body that has kept a line at zero for six years. What He does about the contracts, the school fees and the years ahead is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether one row of it was ever yours to assign. It was not.

So leave one blank. Not the sheet. One row.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at your desk with the sheet open and one row empty. Not because the words are a key and God is a lock. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what the unallocated line says. What He does about the work, the money and the years is His to decide, and a good Provider answers in ways I would never have set down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this study, so let Him.

  1. Spreadsheet with no blank cell, you are a good tool and you are not my master. It is written that a traveler may eat his fill in another man's vineyard, and the God who wrote that built the opening into the field itself.
  2. Fear from the night the contract ended, get out of my study, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit has never spoken one hard word about the sheet that saved us, and He is opening a hand without calling that night my fault.
  3. Lord, You gave a hungry stranger the run of another man's vineyard and never asked the owner's permission, and the margin was Yours before it was mine. One row of mine stays blank this week, and something small has already gone out of this house.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
