The Decision I Made at Thirty One

This message is for the older woman who signed something at thirty one that cost her family badly, who has carried it as a sentence passed on all of them, and who has never once said it out loud to God

She was thirty one and she had a pen in her hand and the man across the table was somebody her husband trusted.

That is how she tells it to herself. That is the whole account, in about eleven words, and she has run it perhaps four thousand times over forty two years.

It was land, in the end, though it started as a loan and a document she did not read properly because reading it properly would have been rude in front of a man in that room. And two years later it had cost them the place they were going to build on, and eleven years later it was the reason her son did not do the thing he had wanted to do since he was fourteen, and she can draw a line from a pen in her hand to a boy standing in a yard being told.

She is seventy three now.

Nobody in that family has ever blamed her. Her husband never once raised it, right up to the end. Her son has said, more than once and in a way that was meant kindly, that it was never her fault and that things worked out. He has a good life. He does.

And none of that has ever touched it, because a thing does not stop being a sentence just because everybody agrees it is not one.

Here is what she has never done, in forty two years. She has never said it out loud to God. She has prayed around it thousands of times. She has asked Him to bless her son. She has thanked Him for the house and the years and the grandchildren. She has never once sat down and said, plainly, in her own voice, what she did in that room at thirty one and what it cost.

She would not be able to tell you why. It is not that she thinks He does not know.

You know that room. Yours might be a decision, or a silence at the wrong moment, or a year when you did not act. And you have taken the thing to a hundred prayers without ever once taking it to God directly, and you have called that faith, and it is nearer to being a locked door in a house you otherwise live in freely.

Come on and sit on the swing with me. It is early and the light is the good kind. There is one line in the law that says where things go in the jubilee, and it is plainer than anybody preaches it.

The Decision I Made at Thirty One

There is no code, and there is a returning

Let me say it plain first, because the name over this door promises a secret and I am not going to sit beside a woman carrying forty two years and hint at one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that unwinds a signature, and I am not going to tell you that God is about to restore the land or the years, because I have not been told that and no honest woman will tell you she has. Nothing here promises a reversal and nothing here dates one.

Here is the line, and it comes at the end of a chapter about vows and valuations, in the middle of a lot of administration.

In the year of the jubile the field shall return unto him of whom it was bought, even to him to whom the possession of the land did belong.Leviticus 27:24

Look at how mechanical that is. There is no drama in it at all. It is not a promise made to a broken person. It is a clause, sitting in a legal chapter, describing what simply happens when the year comes.

And read the second half, because that is where it lives. Even to him to whom the possession of the land did belong. The field goes back to where it belonged. Not to whoever handled it well. Not to whoever did not sign something foolish at thirty one in front of a man in a good coat. It returns on the basis of belonging.

That whole system rests on the fact that God had assigned the ground in the first place, and that no decision made in any room by any frightened woman with a pen could reassign what He had assigned.

You did not reassign your family's belonging, and no signature in that room had that power. That is not a kindness I am offering on a swing. It is written in Leviticus 27, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a dry legal clause and lays it beside a woman who has run eleven words four thousand times.

You have a God who does the returning Himself, and He has never once let one decision become a permanent verdict on a family. Scripture puts the return on belonging rather than on conduct, and His Spirit is the one who takes an administrative sentence and makes it warm.

Now let me say the true thing, since it is early and we are the only ones up.

It is not the land. Your son has a good life and you know it and you have watched it. What has been running for forty two years is a private trial with one defendant, held every day, in which the verdict is never delivered because you never quite finish the hearing.

And the reason you have never said it out loud to God is not that you think He does not know. It is that saying it out loud would end the trial, and the trial is the only penance you have ever been able to offer, and forty two years of carrying it has felt like the least you could do.

That is a woman paying, daily, for something that was paid for a very long time ago.

You are not required to keep paying, and there has never been a court sitting on this except the one you convened. Scripture says that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and faithful and just are legal words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them close the case rather than merely comfort a woman.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because forty two years does not end because an old woman was gentle with you at first light. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what carrying it quietly never does. So say it out loud, here, to Him. You have the standing to speak to a sentence you passed on yourself and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position and not by good decisions, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word further than a porch.

The breakthrough

Something can end this morning, and it is not the past. That happened and I would never sit beside you at first light pretending an hour has undone a decision made at thirty one.

You are held by a God who returns things on the basis of belonging rather than on conduct, and He has never once accepted a woman's forty two years as payment for anything. That is not a mood I am building on a swing. It is written in Leviticus 27, and it is the Spirit's own work to take a dry old clause and land it in a body that has been holding a private trial every day since. What He does about your son, the years and the ground is His to decide, and I will say it plain rather than leave you with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether the trial may be closed. It may. It should have closed a very long time ago, and it needs one thing from you, which is that you say it out loud to Him.

So say it. Here, on this porch, before anybody else is up.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on the porch after you have said the rest of it. Not because the words are a lever and God is a machine. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what you signed at thirty one. What He does about your family and the years is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have set down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this porch, so let Him.

  1. Thing I signed at thirty one, you are one decision and you are not a sentence on my family. It is written that in the year of jubile the field returns to the one it came from, and the God who wrote that is the one who does the returning.
  2. Trial I have held every day for forty two years, get off this porch, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse, and faithful and just are words that close a case.
  3. Lord, You return things on the ground of belonging and never on the ground of who handled them well, and no room I sat in ever had power to reassign what You assigned. God restores what my own arithmetic cannot, and I have said it out loud to You at last.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
