It always starts the same way, which is that she is not thinking about it at all, and then she is.
Two o'clock, roughly. Sometimes ten past. And the sum begins, and it is the same sum every time, and she can do it now without any effort at all. What is on it. What goes off it a month. What goes back on it in a year. And then the bit at the end, which is not really a sum, which is: so I will be somewhere in my fifties.
That is the number that keeps her awake. Not the balance. Fifty.
She is twenty six. She did everything the way it was described to her at seventeen, by adults who genuinely believed what they were saying, and she works, and she is good at her job, and she pays what she is asked to pay every single month, and the amount at the top has gone up rather than down for four years running.
Nobody warned her about that specific feeling. It is not fear exactly. It is closer to being told the ending of a film in the first ten minutes.
She has stopped mentioning it. Her friends have their own versions and it turns into a competition nobody wants. And there is a particular kind of silence that arrives when she is with people who did not have to do this, and she has learned to change the subject before it gets there.
So she lies in the dark at two in the morning and runs an arithmetic that has already decided the next twenty four years of her life.
You know that ceiling. Yours might be a repayment plan, or an amount you were told would be cleared by now, or simply a position you can see is not going to move by effort. And the worst part is not the money. It is that the arithmetic feels like prophecy. It sits there being reasonable and being right, and there is no argument against it, because it is only doing subtraction.
Sit up. Put the light on. I want to say something to you that arithmetic cannot say back.

There is no code, and there is a God who restores years
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I would rather you closed the tab than lay there hoping.
There is no code. There is no arrangement of Scripture that clears a balance, and I am not going to tell you that God is about to do something specific about that number, because I have not been told that and neither has anybody else who is honest with you. Nothing on this site will ever tell you that a prayer or a practice will move a figure by a date.
What Scripture actually carries here is stranger and it is bigger, and it is not about balances at all.
Israel had lost years. Not money. Years. Locusts had come through in waves and taken a series of harvests, one after another, and there is no way to get a harvest back, because a harvest is made of a season and the season is gone. That is the situation God speaks into.
And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.Joel 2:25
Notice what He does not offer. He does not say, I will make next year's crop unusually large. He does not do compensation. He says He will restore the years, which is a thing nobody can do and no arithmetic can produce, and it is the one thing that lost time cannot give back.
I do not know what that will look like in your life and I am not going to invent a picture of it. What I know is that the God who says that sentence is not working within the sum.
You are not sentenced by your own arithmetic, and the God who restores years does not do His counting from where the locusts got to. That is not a comfort I have arranged for two in the morning. It is written in Joel 2, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a promise made to a wrecked agricultural nation and lays it on a duvet in the dark.
You have a God who works outside the sum, and the sum was never the whole account of your life. Scripture says He restores years, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land as something bigger than money rather than as a slogan about it.
Now let me name the real weight, because it is not the fifties.
The arithmetic has quietly told you something about yourself, and it is this: whatever happens now is decoration. The main thing about your life is already decided and it was decided by a form you signed at seventeen. And that belief, running underneath everything, is what makes a promotion feel small and a good week feel temporary.
That is the actual damage. Not the debt. The way the debt has begun to describe you.
You are not defined by a repayment schedule, and no form signed at seventeen has authority to describe your life. Scripture says you are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works which He prepared beforehand for you to walk in, and that sentence puts the plan somewhere the arithmetic cannot reach, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a floor instead of a phrase.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a sum does not stop running because somebody was kind about it at two in the morning. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what lying there thinking never does. So speak, out loud, in the dark, where nobody can hear you. You have the standing to speak to a figure and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by solvency, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a bedroom ceiling.
Something can change tonight, and it is not the balance. I cannot move it and I will not stand here implying that a good half hour has moved it or that God has told me He is about to.
You are held by a God who restores years and never once negotiated with locusts, and He does His counting from somewhere your arithmetic has no access to. That is not a mood I am working up in the dark. It is written in Joel 2, and it is the Spirit's own work to make an old promise land in a body lying awake at two in the morning. What He does about the debt, the interest and your fifties is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than handing you a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether that sum has the right to describe you. It does not, and it never did, and it has been doing it for four years.
So say something out loud that the arithmetic cannot answer.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting up, with the paper written and put away. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what the balance is doing. What He does about the debt, the years and your fifties is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this room, so let Him.
- Sum I do at two in the morning, you are arithmetic and you are not a sentence. It is written that God restores the years, and the God who wrote that is not counting from where I fell.
- Belief that everything now is decoration, get out of my head, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit calls me His workmanship with works prepared beforehand for me to walk in, and no form I signed at seventeen has authority to describe my life.
- Lord, You restore the years that the locusts ate and You never once negotiated with the locusts, and You are not counting from where I fell. God restores what my own arithmetic cannot, and I am going back to sleep.
