The Photograph From the Beach

She was in the car park with the engine off and eleven minutes to spare, which for her is late.

She had the good shoes on. She had the bag with the peppermints in it that she keeps for other people's children. She had done what she does every Sunday, which is get up in a house nobody else lives in and put herself together properly and drive across town to a building where she is one of the first ones in.

And she looked at her phone.

And there it was. A beach. Blue water, a hat, a long table with a lot of glasses on it, and the words about being blessed, and eleven people had already put hearts under it.

She sat there in the car park and something came up in her so fast and so hot that she frightened herself. Not tears. Nothing as reasonable as tears.

The paperwork sits in the second drawer down. She signed as the second name because they could not get it on their own, and she signed it in a kitchen with a cup of tea in front of her because it was going to be six months, tops, and because she has known that family since before the children. Then there was the thing that happened, and then there was the moving, and then there were the letters with her name at the top and not theirs.

She has never missed a payment. Not one, in three years. She has taken shifts she did not want and dropped a thing she loved and told nobody why.

And at nine forty on a Sunday morning she sat in a car park and could not make her hand open the door.

You know that car park. Yours might be a wedding you did not go to. It might be a school gate where you take the long way round. Somebody left you holding something and their life went on and yours narrowed, and the wound is not the money, it is watching somebody be happy on top of it.

Come here. Sit down. I am not going to be quick with you and I am not going to tell you what you feel is wrong.

There is no code, and there is a prayer with an as in it

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I will not stand in front of a woman carrying three years of somebody else's debt and dangle one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that makes that money come back, and nothing in this message is a technique for getting it.

And hear me on the second thing, because women like you get preached at badly on this. Nothing here tells you to tear up paperwork. If there is something lawful still open to you, it stays open to you, and no part of what follows asks you to give up a claim you may need in order to eat. What we are dealing with today is not the file in the second drawer. It is what is sitting on your chest in a car park.

Jesus taught one prayer, and He put a line in it about debts.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.Matthew 6:12

Now, that little word as has been used as a whip on hurting people for centuries, and I am not going to hand it to you that way, because that is not how it works and it is not how He is.

Look at the order of the whole thing. He is teaching people who have already been invited to call God Father. They are not applying for entry. They are inside, praying at a table, and what He gives them is not a bargain, it is a family resemblance. In our Father's house, debts get released. That is the house style. You are asking for it and offering it in the same breath because it is one thing, not because you are buying it.

And He moved first. Before any of us released a single thing, He was already the God who blots out transgressions for His own sake. There was no negotiation. There was no waiting until we were sorry properly.

You are not being asked to earn anything here, and the releasing was never the price of being forgiven. That is not a soft reading I have invented for a hard Sunday. It is the plain sense of the written prayer Jesus gave to people already sitting in the house, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old prayer and lays it across a car park at nine forty in the morning.

You have a Father who released the unpayable thing first, and He has never once made you go first. Scripture says while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, and His Spirit is the one who takes that written line and steadies a body that is shaking in a driver's seat.

Now let me name the real thing, because I have sat with women in your exact position and it is never the money.

What went through you in that car park was not greed and it was not even anger about the debt. It was this: their life carried on and yours got smaller, and nobody knows. Nobody at that church knows about the shifts. Nobody knows what you dropped. You have carried three years of somebody else's decision in complete silence, and then a photograph arrived with hearts under it, and the silence became unbearable in about four seconds.

You are not bitter, and what rose up in that car was grief wearing a hot coat. Scripture says God is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and He saves such as be of a contrite spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written word like nigh and puts it in a passenger seat.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because three years of silence does not end because somebody was gentle with you. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what carrying on never does. So open your mouth, in your own car, out loud. You have the standing to speak to a weight you have carried and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by endurance, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a windscreen.
