The Sunday Night Feeling

This message is for the young woman with a full cupboard and a settled week ahead who still feels the drop in her stomach every Sunday night, and cannot explain it to anyone because nothing is actually wrong

It arrives at about half past seven and she can almost set a clock by it.

Nothing has happened. That is the thing she cannot explain to anybody. The week ahead is normal. She is paid on Friday. There is food in the cupboard, and not a heroic amount, but actually food, and the rent went out on the first and did not bounce, and her phone is not going to be cut off.

And at half past seven on a Sunday something drops in her stomach, and it is the specific drop she used to get in the year when there genuinely was nothing.

She has tried to trace it. Sometimes it is a notification. Sometimes it is the sound of the bin lorry doing the far end of the road, which for some reason is a Sunday sound. Once it was the exact smell of a particular washing powder. Mostly it is nothing at all, and it simply arrives, on time, like something that has been booked in.

She has stopped saying it out loud, because when she says it out loud the answer is always some version of but you are fine now, which is true, and which is precisely what makes it worse, because if she is fine now then what on earth is this.

So she does the thing she does. She opens the banking app, and she looks at a number that is exactly what she knew it would be, and she closes it. That takes eleven seconds and it helps for about four minutes.

You know that half past seven. Yours might be a different hour or a different day. Yours might not be money at all any more, it might be a bill that got paid years ago and a body that never got the message. There was a stretch when there really was nothing, and you got through it, and your nervous system took notes.

Sit down. Leave the phone where it is. There is one sentence of Jesus about tomorrow that is not what people usually do with it.

The Sunday Night Feeling

There is no code, and there is a today

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to keep you here on a Sunday evening hoping for one.

There is no code. There is no arrangement of Scripture that produces money, and nothing here is a technique. And let me say the second thing plainly, because it matters more: if you are in real shortage tonight, if the cupboard is actually empty, nothing in this article is going to tell you to be at peace about that. That would be a wicked thing to say to somebody who is hungry, and Scripture does not say it either.

This is written to the person who has today and cannot feel it. If that is not you tonight, this one is not your article, and you are not being scolded by it.

Here is the sentence.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.Matthew 6:34

People use that as a shrug. It is not a shrug. Look at the last clause, because it is the most realistic sentence in the passage: sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Today has enough trouble in it already. Jesus is not saying life is fine. He is saying today comes with its own weight and that weight is exactly the size of a day.

And the borrowing goes the other way, which is what your Sunday night is. At half past seven you begin carrying a Tuesday that has not happened, on top of a Sunday that already has its own weight, and no human being was designed to carry two days at once. That is why it makes you tired rather than careful.

You are not being asked to be unconcerned, and today was measured to be exactly one day's worth. That is not a soft idea I am arranging for a Sunday evening. It is written into Matthew 6, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence about tomorrow and lays it on a body that has been braced since half past seven.

You have today, and today is met. Scripture says sufficient unto the day, which is a statement about supply as well as about trouble, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old line land in a stomach rather than in a head.

Now let me name the real thing, because you did not come here for time management.

That drop is not a forecast. It is a memory. Your body learned something true in a year when it was true, and it learned it well, because bodies are good at that, and it has kept the alarm on the same schedule ever since. The bin lorry at the far end of the road is not predicting anything. It is reminding.

And here is why the reassurance from other people never lands: they are answering the forecast. You are not experiencing a forecast. There is nothing to argue with, which is why but you are fine now bounces straight off.

You are not being irrational, and a body that remembers a hard year is not a body that has failed. Scripture says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, which is God being tender about exactly this kind of thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a hand on the shoulder rather than a doctrine.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because half past seven does not stop arriving because somebody explained it to you nicely. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what checking an app never does. So speak, out loud, in your own kitchen. You have the standing to speak to an old alarm and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by balance, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a small flat.

The breakthrough

Something can settle tonight, and it is not the whole feeling. I am not going to promise you that half past seven will never arrive again, because I do not know that, and a promise like that would be worth nothing by next Sunday.

You are held by a God who measured out today at exactly one day's weight, and He has never once asked you to carry Tuesday on a Sunday. That is not a mood I am building in a kitchen. It is written in Matthew 6, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a written line land in a body that has been braced for an hour. What He does about the money, the week and the year is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you to bed with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether today has been met. It has. It is in the cupboard, and it is in the account, and it is measured.

So put both hands on something you already have, and say so out loud.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen with your hands still on the shelf. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what the app says. What He does about the money and the week is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this flat, so let Him.

  1. Drop in my stomach on a Sunday, you are a habit and you are not a warning. It is written that today has enough of its own and tomorrow will see to itself, and the God who wrote that measured out this week already.
  2. Alarm my body set in a hard year, get out of my kitchen, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says God knows my frame and remembers I am dust, and a body that remembers is not a body that has failed.
  3. Lord, You said sufficient unto the day, and You never once asked me to carry Tuesday on a Sunday. Today is measured and today is met, and I am holding it in both hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
