It is the third one down and the little gray dot is still on it, and she has become extremely good at scrolling in a way that does not accidentally open it.
Eleven days.
She knows what it says. Broadly. It will be kind, because he is kind, and it will say something about the arrangement they made and whether the first one is still all right for the end of this month, and there will be a line at the end that makes it easy for her, because that is the sort of man he is.
That is exactly why it is unopened. If he were rude she would have replied in four minutes with something crisp.
The arrangement was made in a phone call in the spring, and she meant every word of it, and the first payment was going to be fine because the work was coming in. Then two things did not happen that were meant to happen, and now it is not fine, and she cannot say that in a message because she said it would be fine in a phone call, and the distance between those two facts has been growing for eleven days.
So the dot stays gray. And as long as the dot is gray, she has not read it, and if she has not read it she has not yet failed to answer it, which is a piece of arithmetic that she would laugh at in anybody else.
She has done four other things today that were harder than this. She led a meeting. She rang a hospital about her aunt. She is not a coward, and that is the confusing part.
You know that dot. Yours might be a letter on the side. It might be a voicemail you have never played. It might be an email with a red flag on it that you have moved between folders twice. And the amount is almost never the problem. The problem is that answering means saying out loud the thing you have not said.
Come and sit down and put the phone on the counter face up. I want to give you a verse about a person God welcomes into His own house, and it is not the verse you are bracing for.

There is no code, and there is a today
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I would rather lose you now than hold you with a hint of one.
There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that makes the money arrive by Friday so that you can reply in the way you wanted to reply. And let me say the second thing straight away, because this is where people get hurt: if you cannot pay, you cannot pay, and that is not a moral failure and nothing here is going to tell you it is.
But that is not what has been going on for eleven days, and you know it, because not being able to pay would have taken you four minutes to say.
David is describing the kind of person who is at home in God's presence, and among the marks he lists is this one.
He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.Psalm 15:4
Sit with that phrase. To his own hurt. God is describing somebody who said a thing, and then the circumstances turned, and keeping their word now costs them something they did not expect to pay. And what God says about that person is not that they are impressive. It is that they are welcome. This is a psalm about who abides in His tabernacle, and one of the marks of that person is a word that survived a change in the weather.
Now hear what it is not saying. It is not saying they always had the money. It says to his own hurt, which means the situation went badly. It is about the word, not the balance. The person in that verse is somebody who does not quietly revise what they said when it becomes inconvenient, and revising is a completely different act from being unable.
You are not in the wrong for being short, and the thing being asked of you today is a sentence rather than a sum. That is not a soft reading I have arranged for a hard fortnight. It is the plain sense of Psalm 15, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a psalm about who is at home with God and lays it beside a gray dot on a phone.
You have a God who welcomes the one whose word cost them more than they expected, and He has never once measured that by the balance. Scripture puts it in a list about His own house, and His Spirit is the one who turns a written mark into something a woman can act on before bed.
Now let me name the real thing, because you led a meeting today and rang a hospital, and this has beaten you eleven days running.
It is not avoidance of him. It is avoidance of the version of yourself that has to appear in that reply. You are the one who sorts things. You are the one people ring. And the sentence that has to be sent tonight is a sentence from somebody who said it would be fine and it is not fine, and there is no way to send it that keeps the other version of you intact.
That is the whole eleven days. Not money. Identity.
You are not being reduced by one honest sentence, and the woman who sends it is the same woman who led that meeting. Scripture says God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble, and that grace is not a consolation prize, it is help arriving the moment somebody stops defending a picture, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the word grace warm rather than theoretical.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because eleven days does not end because somebody was insightful about it. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what resolving never does. So speak first, out loud, and then send. You have the standing to speak to a thing that has been running you and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by competence, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a kitchen counter.
Something can end tonight, and it is not the arrangement. I cannot make the money arrive and I am not going to imply that a good half hour has.
You are held by a God who has a place in His own house for the one whose word turned out to cost them, and He has never once required the payment before the honesty. That is not a mood I am building at a counter. It is written in Psalm 15, and it is the Spirit's own work to make an old psalm land in a body that has scrolled carefully past the same message for eleven days. What He does about the work, the money and this month is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you to bed with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you can answer today. You can, and the answering is the whole of what is being asked.
So open it. Read it properly, including the kind line at the end, and then reply.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with the phone in your hand before you send. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what is in the account. What He does about the work and the money is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this kitchen, so let Him.
- Message I have left unread, you are eleven days of nothing and you are not my character. It is written that the one who swears to his own hurt and changes not is welcome in God's house, and the God who wrote that never made honesty wait for a good month.
- Picture of myself I have been protecting, get out of my kitchen, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit gives grace to the humble, and He has never once told me that one honest sentence makes me smaller.
- Lord, You made a place in Your own house for the one whose word cost them more than they expected, and You asked for the word and never for the balance. My word is good today, and the reply goes tonight.
