He got it ready at home. That is the part he has never told anybody. He put it in his inside jacket pocket before he left the house, and he touched it about nine times during the meeting.
His wife was ill. Not the kind of ill anybody was talking about openly yet, the kind where there are appointments and a word nobody has said out loud in the house.
The man who came was well spoken and warm and there was nothing about the evening that would have looked wrong to anybody standing at the back. Afterwards there was a queue, and he stood in it, and when he got to the front he said, could I speak with you about something, and the man said of course, and something in his own hand moved before his mind did, and the envelope went across.
He does not remember what was said afterwards. He remembers that it was kind, and that it was about ten minutes, and that it was not what he had come for, though he could not tell you now what he had come for.
He drove home and did not tell his wife.
That was two years ago and there are two things he cannot do. He cannot say the word envelope in ordinary conversation without something happening in his chest. And he cannot decide whether he is angry with a man he met once for ten minutes, or with himself, so mostly he is quietly both.
His wife came through it, more or less. That is not the point and it has never been the point.
You know that jacket pocket. Yours might be a payment for a session, or a gift given at exactly the moment somebody was going to pray for you. It may have been perfectly innocent on both sides. What sits in you is not the transaction. It is the memory of your own hand moving.
Come and sit down. The chairs are nearly stacked. There is a story in the book of Kings about a man who was offered a fortune and would not take it, and I want you to hear why.

There is no code, and there is a prophet who refused
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I will not put one more of them in your jacket pocket.
There is no code. There was nothing in that envelope that could buy anything, and there was nothing being withheld from you that a private ten minutes would have released.
And now the part I want to be careful with. I am not going to spend this evening being angry at that man. I never met him. He may have been entirely honorable and simply taken what was pressed into his hand by a frightened husband, which is a thing that happens in a doorway before anybody has thought. Your peace is not going to be built on his condemnation, because a peace built that way needs somebody new to blame every year and never sits still.
Here is the story. A general with a skin disease is healed, and he comes back to the prophet with a fortune, and he presses it on him.
But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.2 Kings 5:16
Notice two things.
The general urged him. It was not a shakedown, it was gratitude with money in its hands, and it was offered warmly and repeatedly, exactly the way you offered yours. Elisha still says no.
And notice his reason, which is in the first clause. As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand. He refuses because of who he is standing in front of. Taking it would have made the healing a transaction, and the healing was not his to sell, and both of them knowing that mattered more than the money did.
You were not buying anything that evening, and there was never anything on sale. That is not a comfort I have arranged in a doorway. It is written into 2 Kings 5, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a prophet's refusal and lays it beside a man who has not been able to say a word for two years.
You have a God who has never taken payment from anybody, and standing before Him is exactly why. Scripture says as the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, and His Spirit is the one who takes an old refusal and makes it settle something in a chest.
Now let me name the true thing, because it is not about money and you know it.
Your hand moved before your mind did. That is the sentence that has been running for two years.
And here is what was actually in that movement. Your wife was ill and there was a word nobody had said in your house and you were a man with almost nothing you could do about any of it. And you found something you could do, in a doorway, with your own hand, and you did it.
That was not greed and it was not superstition. It was a husband finding the only available action.
You were not fooled, and what moved your hand was love with nowhere to put itself. Scripture says that God is a very present help in trouble, and the word trouble there is not tidy or theological, it is the ordinary word for a tight place, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like that reach a man two years later.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because two years of a word you cannot say does not shift because a friend was decent to you at a doorway. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what carrying it never does. So speak, out loud, on your own. You have the standing to speak to a shame and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by judgement, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a hall.
Something can end tonight, and it is not the memory. You will remember that doorway, and I am not standing here suggesting a good evening has erased it.
You are held by a God whose prophet refused a fortune because of who he was standing in front of, and He has never once let His gift have a price on it. That is not a mood I am building with the chairs going up. It is written in 2 Kings 5, and it is the Spirit's own work to take an old refusal and land it in a body that flinches at a word. What He does about the money, the memory and the years is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you bought something you should not have bought. There was nothing on sale. There never was.
So say it out loud once, and let it be finished.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud on your own with the door shut. Not because the words are a lever and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with one evening two years ago. What He does about your wife, the money and the years is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this hall, so let Him.
- Envelope I put into a hand, you are one evening and you are not a verdict on me. It is written that a prophet stood before a healed man and said I will receive none, and the God he served has never once charged anybody for anything.
- Shame at my own hand moving, get out of my chest, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says God is a very present help in a tight place, and what moved my hand that night was love with nowhere to put itself.
- Lord, You have never taken payment from anybody, and standing before You is the whole reason Your prophet refused. I was looking for You and somebody took what I offered, and I am not foolish, I am found.
